I definitely want to read this book before I watch the movie .. the trailer looks like a tear-jerker! Eat, Pray, Love was a book that inspired me to take a journey .. not sure if I could do a solo trek to India and live in an ashram just yet, but maybe someday!
Very excited for this movie. The Shack Book is eyeopening for anyone, more spiritual than religious. It puts a face on people we only know of in a Biblical manner. An awesome movie for thinkers :) The conversations people have after seeing The Shack movie will be interesting.

Whenever I read a book, I will imagine the scenes the author depicts.
On the Road by Kerouac and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Thompson inspired me to take a cross country roadtrip. David Sedaris' stories in Naked cautioned me against hitchhiking. Speaking of hitching, HHGTTG also kinda sorta inspired me, too.

What Is The Shack About
It was the book 'Trieste and The Meaning of Nowhere' by Jan Morris that inspired me to travel to Italy.
I've long had a curiosity about Italy, which was stimulated by stories my Dad shared with me of his experiences in Italy as a GI during the Summer of 1945. He always maintained that the oranges he ate in Italy were among the best, most sweetest oranges he ever had.
Reading Trieste and The Meaning of Nowhere made me want to go to Italy more than ever. It's a city in Northeastern Italy with a unique history, having once been a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before it was ceded to Italy in 1919. Napoleon himself once spent a night there in 1797 when he was a General in the Army of Italy.
So I travelled to Italy in July 2010, visiting both Trieste and Venice. If anything, I fell more in love with the character and landscape of the country. One day at dusk, I stood at the port of Trieste, looking out over the Adriatic Sea as a small, passenger ship came in, arriving at dockside as night fell. And travelling the canals of Venice, going from the island of San Marco (where the awe-inspiring Doge's Palace is located, bordering on St. Mark's Square, which the tour guide assured me was the largest public square in the world) to the island of Giudecca was like something out of a James Bond movie or a Thomas Mann novel.
I LOVED IT. And for anyone set on going to Italy, you have to try the limoni. it is DELICIOUS!
Wasn't inspired to travel because of the book, but reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr made my trip to St. Malo all the more special and rich!

I've always wanted to travel, and I do travel at some length every year but I don't obsess over it all the time. Truth or Beard reminded me of my wanderlust recently. And I have read so many Penny Reid books since.

'Before They're Gone: A Family's Year-Long Quest to Explore America's Most Endangered National Parks' by Michael Lanza. Along with this, I also read both 'A Walk in the Woods' and 'Wild' which also were inspiring to visit natural places!

So Lisa, what does 'wreck me' mean? Is it good or bad? I have been a Christian for most of my life. I loved this book! It really stretched my spiritual journey, and how I pictured God both in my mind and in scripture. I am re-reading it before I go to the movie. I don't think it will 'wreck me' but I have always liked the book better than the movie. So we will see what happens.
I travelled through Israel years ago, but I have read so much on Egypt, that going there is a life long dream. Reading allows me to visit places I can't quite get to yet!
Looks like a great book that I have not had a chance to read,yet. I think I would love to read the book before seeing the movie. I have read a few Amish books that made me journey to see how and why their lives are so simple.
I love dark thrillers and procedurals happening in exotic locations that will work lovely as armchair travel. There are many places i want to explore in location, imcluding even north korea. So far.. I've only re-discovered the Helsinki of inspector Vaara of James Thompson.

Inspired me on my solo backpacking trip to Colorado. One of the best experiences of my life. My lil sister even greeted me at the airport with a sign that said 'Cheryl Strayed!' :-D
I want to go to Japan with all my heart; inspired me to go where I please!
I've been to Italy before Eat, Pray, Love came out. The book is inspiring my to learn Italian and return someday to explore more of the country.
My top inspirational book by far is Autobiography of a Yogi that took my spiritual journey to undetermined yet plateaus :0)

Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart: An Adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail
Both of these books inspired me to plan a solo thru hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2018! As a woman, alot of people find it insane to journey solo into the mountains for 6 months. But the books by Carrot Quinn and Cheryl Strayed really empowered me to realize that I can accomplish whatever I want. Can't wait for this journey!
I am an avid fan of Cara Black's mysteries set in Paris. After reading her Murder in Belleville, I went to Paris by myself. In the book, a circus in Belleville is noted. So, I went to the circus on a cool, November, Wednesday afternoon. It was a small tent with a five-piece band that played blues music. The circus performers were young and very talented. At the end of the circus, as the band was playing, the clown came to my seat and took me into the ring and danced with me. It was such a happy day thanks to Cara Black.
I take a journey with most of the books I read. It's one of the reasons I love to read. I can't afford to travel now, but I have a plan for when I eventually retire that involves selling my house and buying an RV. My favorite books are ones that take me to the beach.
I love all of these examples of inspiring books. One book that hasn't been mentioned yet and had a great impact on me is 'Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives' by Dan Millman. His whole series is a fantastical journey into spiritual awareness with a little badassery thrown in.

I read Eat, Pray, Love before my semester studying abroad in England. It inspired me to travel by myself in several countries, including Greece, Italy and Spain. The memories I made during those solo trips were some of the best of that semester, and those from which I believe I experienced the most personal growth. There were many times where I was lost, confused or nervous and I learned that there is nothing I cannot overcome when I put my mind to it.
The Alchemist is a book that really stuck with me. I haven't reviewed it yet because I'm still thinking over it. I imagine I'll read it a few more time before that happens. This book started me on a spiritual journey. And I'm still there. I am learning to observe and be patient. And I can't wait to see where this journey takes me!
At 60 and trying to stay positive day to day while living with leukemia, books are my outlet. I have to rely on authors to take me places that will probably remain untouched by my presence. I loved 'Ove' and 'Harold Fry' and I cried over the Book Thief and Enzo in the Art of Racing in the Rain. While they aren't 'journey' books, I love Karen White's stories. She writes often of coastal areas along Georgia, Louisiana and the Carolinas. I have taken vacations to see for myself the tree carvings, old churches and cemeteries and the avenue of the oaks that are mentioned in her stories. I love books that make you think of life, give you courage and enrich the soul.
Girl in the Woods by Aspen Matis!! It gives the reader courage to try and really puts an emphasis on the healing power of nature. Loved it.
I have read 'The Shack' three times, and I would like to read it again before I see the movie. This is a book that will deepen my understanding of a relationship with God every time I read it. And I pray that it's taken so long to make it into a movie because they want to be sure the essence of this priceless piece of literature is not lost in translation.

Under the Tuscan Sun made me want to go to Italy and I enjoyed that section of Eat Pray, Love so much after I had been there. I've been three times and it is still one of, if not my favorite place to visit
Anything by John O'Donohue! Going to Ireland in a few weeks to experience some of the places he speaks of..so, physical journey: yes. Spiritual journey: even more so. This guy changed my life.

When I read Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I made a promise to myself to one day visit Greece! I haven't made it there yet, but it's on my 'bucket list.'
I recently read Lost and loved it. It is a journey of 3 people lost at sea for +/- 74 days. I really enjoyed one characters ability to remain positive and continue to believe he would survive. He set up daily activities to keep them engaged and help fight depression. It also touches on religion and struggles with faith which I am sure many people struggle with today. It helped me remember how strong a positive mind is.
Reading Wild and A Walk in the Woods has inspired my husband and me to begin taking hiking trips thru Michigan and some of the Smokey Mountains. So far, only day trips, but we are planning a weekend outing in Vermont this spring!!
I recently read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Guernsey is our first stop on a cruise of the British Isles this summer. We are taking a walking tour with a woman who discusses the book & how the occupation affected her parents and the area.
Ever since I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, I've promised myself a trip to Savannah. I will get there someday.
I did hike the entire Appalachian Trail and there were many books I read about people's experiences on the trail that inspired me and had me looking for particular landmarks. A Walk in the Woods was certainly one of them as well as AWOL on the Appalachian Trail.

If the film feels religious based, you'd be right. The story is based on the book of the same name by author William P Young, a book that is filed under Christian Fiction. In the book, Mack ( Sam Worthington) discovers the three persons of the Trinity. Octavia Spencer, named Elouisa, is really the God the Father. Avraham Aviv Alush is Papa, aka Jesus. And finally we have Sumire Matsubara as Sarayu, who is the Holy Spirit. The film will mostly cover the conversations Mack has with these three entities.

Before Sam Worthington was cast, Forest Whitaker was originally set to both star and direct. It would seem that the actor instead decided to go with co-starring in the sci-fi drama Arrival. Based on how amazing that film is, he made the right choice.
While Sam Worthington has become known mostly for actioners, it is good to see the actor mixing things up with a (tragic) drama here and there. Especially since he is looking to get super busy again with future Avatar installments.

The trailer for The Shack looks solid, especially for those of you who are just craving some tragedy. The preview leaves out another plot element, such as how the story also covers the discovery of a serial killer known as the 'Little Ladykiller.' While the film's main focus is obviously healing for our lead father, there is also a bit of mystery and investigation involved as well. Crazy games governor of poker.
While The Shack is not going to be something I'll be racing to theaters for, it should make for interesting at-home viewing.
